ORANGES are one of the most beloved fruits, known for their refreshing taste and high vitamin C content. They help boost immunity and skin health, so they are often considered the perfect dietary supplement. However, while they are very beneficial for many, oranges are not ideal for everyone.
Due to their natural acidity, sugar content, and specific plant compounds, oranges can aggravate certain health conditions or cause adverse reactions. That’s why it’s important to know when to avoid them or consume them with caution.
Acid reflux and GERD
People who suffer from acid reflux or GERD should avoid oranges. This fruit is high in citric acid, which can further irritate the stomach and worsen symptoms like heartburn, chest pain, and acid reflux.
One study found that eating citrus fruits can relax the muscle that closes the esophagus, increasing the risk of reflux. It is especially harmful to eat oranges on an empty stomach. Instead of oranges, bananas, papayas, or melons, which contain less acid, may be better choices.
Kidney problems
Although oranges are a good source of potassium, people with chronic kidney disease should avoid them. When the kidneys are not working properly, they have difficulty removing excess potassium from the body, which can lead to a condition called hyperkalemia.
This condition can cause fatigue, muscle weakness, and even heart problems. People who have impaired kidney function or are on dialysis should definitely consult a doctor before consuming foods rich in potassium, including oranges.
Allergies to citrus
Oranges can cause allergic reactions in some people. Most often, it is a reaction to certain proteins found in citrus fruits. Symptoms can include itching, rash, burning or swelling around the mouth.
In more severe cases, breathing difficulties may occur. If such reactions occur, consumption should be discontinued immediately and medical advice should be sought.
Frequent heartburn
The acidity of oranges can worsen heartburn, especially in people who are prone to it. The acidic juice irritates the lining of the esophagus and can relax the muscle that prevents stomach acid from flowing back up. This can cause an uncomfortable burning sensation in the chest.
If you have heartburn problems, try cutting out oranges and other acidic fruits from your diet. Instead, eat fruits that are naturally milder, such as pears, apples, or watermelon.
Chronic constipation
Oranges contain fiber, which aids digestion, but consuming too much, especially without enough fluids, can have the opposite effect. Insoluble fiber adds bulk to stool, but if you don’t drink enough water, it can become hard and difficult to pass.
If you are prone to constipation, it is recommended that you eat oranges in moderation and drink enough fluids throughout the day.
